Breast augmentation surgery, also known as breast enlargement or ‘boob job’, is one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery for women throughout the world. It involves the placing of implants under the breast tissues to increase the size and for even changing the size of the breasts.
After pregnancy and breastfeeding, most women are unhappy with the size of her breasts as it tends to sag. Aging is another factor for having sagging breasts. During puberty, some women’s breasts might not develop completely. A good solution for all these problems is to opt for breast implants. Breast implants not only help to enlarge the breast size and improve the breast asymmetry but it helps to increase the lost volume of the breasts since breastfeeding, weight loss, and pregnancy.
Breast enlargement or enhancement is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries. It is carried out under local or general anesthesia. The operation time might vary from one patient to another.
One thing that needs to be kept in mind is that breast implants could be placed in the following manner:
- Over the muscle or behind the breast
- Partially under the muscle
- Completely under the muscle
The surgeon makes a small incision in the skin, along the crease of the breast. However, the cut could be also made in the underarm or around the areola. Once the incision is made on the planned area, a pocket is formed either directly under the tissue or below the muscle or between the breast tissue and chest muscle. The positioning of the implants depends on the size and shape of the breast, the person’s anatomy, and the looseness of the skin. The surgeon will consider the ideal position of the implants.
Once the area is decided, the chosen implants would be inserted inside the pocket. The incision will then be sutured with dissolvable stitches. The incision area will be covered by dressings. (Note: There are various options with regards to the implants. They are Silicone Implants, Saline Implants.)
- Improved self-esteem and confidence
- Ability to wear various clothes
- Get your desired breast shape
- Feel happier with your breast appearance
- Get breasts that are proportionate to the body
Just like any other cosmetic procedure, this surgery also consists of some risks. They are:
- Swelling and Bruising
- Chance of infection
- You will be able to go home one or two days after the surgery.
- Restrict from strenuous activities for 6 weeks.
- A follow-up consultation is required so that the surgeon can understand how you are doing.
During breast enlargement surgery with implants, your surgeon will evaluate the general health and medical history of the patient. They will take photographs and discuss the type of options available. The surgeon will discuss the procedure in details and it’s important to understand the whole process properly. Before the surgery, it’s important to follow the instructions given by the surgeon.
During the surgery, the incision would be made along the fold under the breast and also in the armpit. Incisions are made based on the anatomy and the desired level of enlargement. The implant is inserted into the pocket via the incision either behind the breast tissue or under the pectoral muscle. Once the implant is inserted, the incision is sutured.
Patients are advised to wear a supportive bra or a sports bra for 6 weeks after the surgery. The patient would experience some kind of pain or discomfort for a few days after the surgery. Heavy and strenuous work should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. All forms of exercise should be avoided for the first two weeks of the surgery.
Breast augmentation with implants is ideal for women who have small or underdeveloped breasts. Similarly, those who have sagging or asymmetric breasts can opt for breast reconstruction surgery with implants.
